National Portrait Gallery, Women at Work: 1900 to Now
We designed the catalogue 'Women at Work: 1900 to Now' for the National Portrait Gallery in collaboration with John Philip Sage. The book features over 100 inspiring women and their achievements in fields including science, activism, photography and design. Their stories are illustrated with artworks from the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection. Embracing the text-heavy content we developed a flexible three-column grid that allows the images to be inserted into the text in different positions on each spread, reminiscent of newspaper layouts.
A series of essays punctuate the chronology, visually differentiated from the rest of the content with a pale green background tint.
Celebrating the work of another woman in a field dominated by men, we selected a typeface designed by Costa Rica-based type designer Fabiola Mejía. On the front cover and essay headers the type stretches across the page, visually playing with the timeline format of the content.
