Co Projects
Co Projects saw the studio dive into product design with our first collection, Co 001, where a curious material investigation and playful approach to structural forms led to the development of a modular candle holder set. Created exclusively for Atelier100, an IKEA-backed store in Hammersmith dedicated to championing independent creatives and local design, the candle holders were cast using reclaimed brick dust from a west London brick merchant and salvaged waste charcoal from Wakehurst in Sussex. Sold with a set of pure beeswax candles hand-poured in Hackney, the resulting unique material palette is an ode to London. Cast into new forms, fragments of the city and surrounding area tell stories of the materials’ former lives and the Londoners who are transforming and giving them new purpose.
Each element of the product – from the recyclable cardboard packaging to the hand-finished aluminium cylinder components – was sourced within 100km of London. In this way, the Co 001 collection further celebrates local manufacturers and makes full use of all that we have at our fingerprints whilst in turn reducing the product’s carbon footprint. The sustainable approach to the design of this collection demonstrates sensitivity to the environmental impacts of waste management, sourcing practices, and production processes and further solidified our understanding of the cost-saving benefits of incorporating reclaimed materials and local manufacturers into our outcomes. It is an approach that we intend to further weave into each project going forward.
Co Projects is an ongoing experimental initiative within our studio. We are passionate about dedicating time to this self-initiated space in which we have the freedom to indulge our collective and individual creative curiosities and research interests. With a keen focus on sustainable approaches to design, whether that be through responsibly-sourced materials or eco production processes, this playful aspect of our practice is ever-informing the studio’s work for external clients and the knowledge that we can offer as consultants.
